The Sabin Family Scholarship for Interdisciplinary Research
The Sabin Family Scholarship supports innovative, interdisciplinary research projects that explore the intersection of Italian Studies with other fields. The recipient will receive $2,500 to conduct interdisciplinary research in Italy. Below are the guidelines for students wishing to submit a proposal.
1. Eligibility
- The scholarship is open to undergraduate students who have completed the equivalent of three semesters of Italian at Wake Forest. This requirement may be waived in exceptional circumstances.
- The research proposal must demonstrate a clear connection between Italian studies (language, literature, culture, history, etc.) and one or more other disciplines (e.g., art, politics, science, sociology, stem etc.).
2. Proposal Structure
Your proposal should include the following sections:
A. Title Page
- Title of the project
- Name of the applicant
- University affiliation
- Your email
- Name of your Italian faculty advisor
B. Project Abstract (Max 250 words)
- Provide a summary of your research project. Highlight the research questions, the disciplines involved, and the potential contribution to Italian studies and other disciplines.
C. Research Objectives (Max 500 words)
- Clearly outline the main research objectives. Explain the interdisciplinary nature of the project and how it integrates Italian studies with other fields.
D. Methodology (Max 500 words)
- Describe the research methods you will use to achieve your objectives. Specify how you will collect data, conduct analysis, or utilize specific resources (libraries, archives, etc.).
E. Interdisciplinary Connection (Max 500 words)
- Elaborate on the relationship between Italian studies and the other discipline(s).. Explain how this intersection will provide new insights or understanding in each field.
F. Timeline
- Provide a detailed timeline of the project, including key milestones. Projects should be feasible to complete within the academic year or the designated scholarship period.
G. Expected Outcomes (Max 300 words)
- Specify the anticipated results of your research and their potential impact on both Italian studies and to other fields.
H. Budget (if applicable)
- Include an itemized budget if your project requires funding for travel, materials, or other research-related expenses. Be specific about how the scholarship funds will be used.
I. References
- List any academic sources or works that you plan to consult in the course of your research.
3. Submission Process
- Proposals must be submitted by March 1st.
- Submit your proposal as a single PDF document via email to haynesp@wfu.edu and macmile@wfu.edu
- Include “Sabin Family Scholarship Proposal – [Your Name]” in the subject line.
4. Evaluation Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Originality: How innovative is the research topic and its interdisciplinary approach?
- Clarity: Are the objectives, methodology, and interdisciplinary connections clearly articulated?
- Feasibility: Is the project achievable within the proposed timeline and budget?
- Impact: How will the project contribute to the field of Italian studies and the interdisciplinary area it addresses?
5. Award Notification
Recipients will be notified by April 1st. At the conclusion of the project, the scholarship recipient will be required to present their findings to the Wake Forest community through a presentation organized in collaboration with their advisor. Additionally, they will participate in the URECA Research Day at Wake Forest University.
