Captain Mario G. Vangeli and Katrina Tanner Memorial Fund Scholarship
The Captain Mario G. and Katrina Tanner Vangeli Memorial Fund provides an endowed scholarship aimed at supporting students enrolled in Italian courses within the Italian Studies Program. This scholarship is designed to encourage students to study abroad in Italy, enriching their academic and cultural experiences. The scholarship will provide financial assistance on an annual basis to deserving students, helping them pursue summer or semester study abroad programs in Italy.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the Captain Mario G. and Katrina Tanner Vangeli Memorial Fund Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Enrollment:
- Applicants must have completed the equivalent of two semesters of Italian at Wake Forest.
- Preference may be given to students minoring in Italian.
2. Academic Standing:
- Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Demonstrated academic commitment and interest in Italian language and culture.
3. Study Abroad Program:
- Applicants must be accepted or plan to apply to an approved summer or semester study abroad program in Italy.
- Programs must be accredited by the university or a recognized study abroad provider.
4. Faculty Reference:
- Applicants must submit the name and contact information of a Faculty Reference.
Application Process
1. Submission Deadline:
- Applications must be submitted by March 1st for summer study abroad programs and by October 15th for semester programs in the following academic year (i.e., Fall 2025 – Spring 2026)
2. Application Materials:
- Personal statement (500–750 words) detailing your academic and cultural goals for studying in Italy, how the experience aligns with your career aspirations, and how the scholarship will assist in achieving these goals.
- Name of Faculty Reference
- Proof of acceptance or pending application to a study abroad program in Italy.
3. Selection Process:
- The Italian faculty will review all applications based on academic merit and alignment of goals with the purpose of the scholarship.
- Finalists may be asked to participate in an interview with the selection committee.
Scholarship Award
- Award Amount: Up to $2000
- Notification: Recipients will be notified of the award by April 1st for summer programs and by November 1st for semester programs.
- Use of Funds: The scholarship funds are intended to cover expenses related to the study abroad program, including tuition, travel, housing, and academic materials.
Expectations of Recipients
- Academic Performance: Scholarship recipients are expected to maintain good academic standing during their study abroad program.
- Cultural Ambassadorship: Recipients are encouraged to engage actively in Italian culture and language during their stay in Italy.
